Well in Logba Horglikope

Logba Hoglikope, located in Afadjato South District of the Volta region, is home to about 1500 residents who have lived without potable water for over 60 years. Its dwellers have been obtaining drinking water from the Vui River located approximately 9 km away. According to one community leader, the Vui waters have recently turned dirty and discolored because of the activities of rice farmers upstream. REACH 4 Ghana has been going to Logba for the past 5 years to hold medical clinics and public health education. The addition of a clean water project to our partnership with this community was an opportunity to improve the health and well being of the people.

Through the invaluable coordination of Life for the Living Medical and Humanitarian Centre and its director, Rev. Benjamin Bankas, the donations of many individuals and organizations contributing to REACH 4 Ghana were put to good use. Bengeo Hydro Ventures, an engineering firm based in Accra and Ho, drilled a 95 meters (311ft) deep bore hole and constructed an electric pump system that is projected to provide clean water to the community and surrounding villages for 20-25 years. The community actually did not have electricity during and for several months after the well was constructed, and powered the well with a generator. However, as a result of the well, an electric line was installed for the community and that will also raise the quality of life of individuals living there.

In line with our goals for sustainability, a water management committee was formed from a team of village members who received formal training in the well’s upkeep and management. Bengeo Hydro Ventures will also return to service the well every 3 years. The community additionally partnered with us to provide the labor for the well construction.
