Brief History

Rural Education and Community Health for Ghana (REACH 4 Ghana) was founded in 2010 by three first year medical students - Allison Powers, Jeremy Powers, and Albert Duah (from left to right) of Richmond, Virginia. Sharing a vision to build meaningful partnerships with Ghanaians to improve health and support development in that country, these three sought like-minded peers to join them for a three week mission to the Volta Region of Ghana. In the months prior to departure, the team engaged in cultural competency training, fundraising, and patient-centered research in order to best serve the needs of the communities. From June 19 to July 10, 2011, this team of fifteen medical students worked alongside Ghanaian volunteers and community leaders in five villages to assist with medical treatment, public health education, and development projects. The 2011 Trip was truly the first of many. R4G has successfully carried out medical trips in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2015, we ventured into new territory with a development project to build a well in one of the villages we partner with, Logba Horglikope. We are excited about what the future will bring, with continued medical trips and clinics, as well as development and public health projects including clean water and sanitation.
